CLT20 trophy unveiled

When 12 teams from 7 nations come together in a first of its kind competition, the winner's trophy becomes the subject of much curiosity and interest. Little wonder that the   ceremony where the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 cup was revealed began with the audience, made up largely of media professionals, holding their breath in anticipation.

An incredible and panoramic ocean-view from the rooftop of the Mumbai hotel greeted guests as they walked into the event studded with stars from the world of sports and business. Lalit Modi, Chairman CLT20 and Manu Sawhney, MD ESPN Star introduced the tournament and fielded questions - but the biggest star of the evening made an appearance only much later. Once the presentations were made and the media bytes were delivered, the tantalisingly covered trophy was unveiled for the waiting crowd - and the wait was worth it.

Inspired by the CLT20 logo, the trophy's petals are studded with precious and semi-precious gemstones. Designed and hand-crafted for the event, it is embellished with 5.12 carat diamonds and stands 1.5 feet tall. The petals lift up a platinum globe with emerald green stitching set in green gemstones. The different coloured petals, holding the globe up, signify the diversity of the league of champions. The entire trophy is mounted on a mahogany-coloured, dark wooden base.

The detailing and craftsmanship that mark this piece of work are worthy of the champions that aspire to it. One look at the glittering trophy and you know why this tournament is different from its counterparts in the sporting world - the local mixes with the international, just like gold and platinum in the trophy's design. At six kgs, its not such an easy task to lift the trophy - a metaphor for the champion of champions title. Come October, 12 domestic sides try to chart their course that, they hope, will end with this trophy in their hands. This evening, for those present at the event, there is now a glittering and magnetic image to go with CLT20. The competition promises to be every bit as engaging.

Twenty facts of T20 Cricket

  1. Twenty20 format of Cricket was invented by ECB marketing manager Stuart Robertson in year 2000-01.
  2. The first ever T20 International was played on February 17, 2005 between Australia and New Zealand in Auckland
  3. Upsets are part of T20 matches. Bangladesh beating West Indies and Zimbabwe beating Australia is possible.
  4. World Champions India have only played 13 T20matches so far
  5. If the fielding team do not start to bowl their 20th over within 75 minutes, the batting side is credited extra six runs for every over bowled.
  6. In case of a tie in the deciding 'Super Over' or 'Eliminator', the team with the maximum number of sixes will win the game
  7. So far, 22 T20 matches have ended in a tie.
  8. Highest T20 score is 260/6 - Sri Lanka against Kenya in Johannesburg on September 14, 2007.
  9. Pakistan's Sialkot Stallions are the team with maximum consecutive wins in T20s. From February 24, 2006 to till date they are yet to loose any game.
  10. Australia's Ian Harvey scored the first century in T20s - 100* in 50 balls for Gloucestershire against Warwickshire in Birmingham on June 23, 2003.
  11. India’s Yuvraj Singh is the only batsman to hit Six Sixes in a row in T20.
  12. Rohit Sharma scored the only three figure score in T20s on Indian soil — an unbeaten 101 in 45 balls for Mumbai against Gujarat in Mumbai on April 4, 2007.
  13. Andrew Symonds has scored the fastest century in T20s (34 balls) during his knock of 112 for Kent against Middlesex at Maidstone on July 2, 2004.
  14. Australian David Hussey has hit the maximum sixes — 82.
  15. Sohail Tanvir's 6-14 for Rajasthan against Chennai in Jaipur on May 4, 2008 is the best ever bowling performance in T20s.
  16. Dimitri Mascarenhas became the first bowler in T20s to claim a hat-trick, when he achieved this distinction for Hampshire against Sussex at Hove on July 7, 2004.
  17. Yuvraj Singh is the only bowler in T20s to claim hat-tricks on two separate occasions.
  18. A maiden over in T20 is difficult but South Africa's Tyron Henderson and David Masters of England have six maidens each in their T20 career — the most in T20s.
  19. South Africa's Albie Morkel has the distinction of appearing in most T20 matches. He has played 82 matches for various teams.
  20. Unlike 50-50 World cup, T20 World cup organizes every second year. First World cup was held at South Africa.

12 September, 2009

Finally I have come around to my first T20 analysis. I had to do some serious T20 ratings analysis work related to another project and as part of that work, I looked at T20 matches from a totally different angle. One aspect of this analysis was to determine a reasonable target score for the first innings (the target score for the second innings is no problem, even when the learned professors, M/s Duckworth and Lewis come in with their umbrellas!). The team’s achievement in terms of exceeding or falling short of the dynamically computed target score is determined to compute one segment of the individual ratings. It also allows me to allocate the credits between bowlers and batsmen.Let me add that my database, current upto the West Indies - England game, is limited to T20 International matches and as of now I have no intention of building a Database of other club-based T20 matches.
First some facts about T20 matches. Let me say .....................

Knowing "CHAMPIONS LEAGUE T20 " Team Part-2

SUSSESX SHARKS

The Sussex County Cricket Club is probably the one with the strongest connection with the sub-continent. From the regal Ranjitsinghji and Nawab of Pataudi to Pakistan's most charismatic captain, Imran Khan, the county boasts of a rich lineage.

After successes in the longer version of the game, the Sussex side finally toppled the much fancied Somerset County Cricket Club in the domestic Twenty20 Cup. With all-rounders Dwayne Smith and Luke Wright filling the ranks, Sussex Sharks might just turn out to be the big fish of CLT20.

DIAMOND EAGLES

Diamond Eagles have been the most successful cricket team in South Africa since the inception of the franchise system for all domestic competitions. It is the other team apart from Cape Cobras to represent South Africa in the Champions League.

Apart from the Titans, they're the only South African league to have won all three domestic trophies in the course of the past four seasons and have had five trophy successes altogether. The Eagles have a number of home-grown players in their squad. Although they do not possess a Cricket SA contracted player at present, that has not always been the case. Boeta Dippenaar plays for the Eagles.

VICTORIA BUSHRANGERS

Judged purely on form, Victorian Bushrangers are one of the top contenders to win the CLT20 2009. The Bushrangers are an Australian team based in Melbourne and represent the state of Victoria. They were winners of the first three editions of the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash that took place in 2005-06, 2006-07 and 2007-08.

Captain Cameron White has the reputation of being a big hitter in the T20 domestic circuit. The Bushrangers' key batsmen are Brad Hodge and David Hussey, while Peter Siddle and Bryce McGain share bowling honours. It remains to be seen how the side, which has been dominant in the domestic T20 circuit over the past four seasons, will fare against the world’s best clubs in CLT20 2009.

ROYAL CHALLENGERS BANGALORE

Royal Challengers Bangalore, like Deccan Chargers, had ended up at the bottom of the table in the inaugural edition of DLF IPL. Both met in the final of IPL 2009 in South Africa. Anil Kumble led RCB with great heart, but was unable to win the title.

Kumble’s most impressive virtues as a cricketer - grit and determination - came to the fore in South Africa. And he will be hoping to continue the good work in this year’s Airtel Champions League Twenty20 tournament. Royal Challengers Bangalore lost four of their first five matches in IPL 2009, but made a startling comeback to make it to the semi-finals.

DELHI DAREDEVILS

Delhi Daredevils have a number of genuine match-winners in their squad. They boast of Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir at the top of the order while wicketkeeper-batsman Dinesh Karthik beefs up the middle-order. Tillakaratne Dilshan has been a revelation in this format.

The England batsmen, Paul Collingwood and Owais Shah, are two of the canniest, most versatile limited overs batsmen to come out of county cricket in the past decade. England T20 skipper Collingwood and AB de Villiers of South Africa lift up the fielding while bowlers Daniel Vettori and Amit Mishra, India's latest leg-spin find, keep the opposition in check.

SOMERSET SABRES

Continuing in their glorious tradition, Somerset Sabres have managed to break new ground over the last few years. Long after the likes of Sir Viv Richards, Sir Ian Botham and Joel Garner have finished their careers, the club is still home to some big successes.

The formidable opening pair of skipper Justin Langer and Marcus Trescothick has scripted many a win for the side. Langer & Co. failed to repeat their 2005 success in the Twenty20 Cup this year, but now comes the big opportunity in the inaugural Airtel Champions League Twenty20 competition.

NEW SOUTH WALES

The New South Wales cricket team, or the Speed Blitz Blues, is one of the most high profile teams in the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 contest consisting of eight centrally contracted players by Cricket Australia. Based in Sydney, the team competes in the first-class competition, the Sheffield Shield, the Ford Ranger Cup (limited-overs cricket) and the KFC Twenty20 Big Bash.
NSW Twenty20 win
It is widely believed that if the New South Wales team is strong, cricket in Australia is blooming. Australia’s icons and international cricketing royalty, Sir Donald Bradman, Richie Benaud, Steve Waugh and Glenn McGrath, have played first-class cricket for New South Wales. The Speed Blitz Blues have won the first-class competition 44 times and the one-day domestic cup nine times.
